Canine Skills with Liza
Our Canine Skills classes focus on handler skill, empowering owners to grow their abilities and strengthen their relationship with their dog.
With the core concepts of clarity, confidence and consistency, owners will be able to take the lessons they learn and use them throughout their dog’s life for a variety of behaviours beyond the scope of a single class. All behaviours are taught without the use of intimidation or pain, instead using scientifically proven methods that build trust and understanding between handler and dog.
Canine Skills Level 1 focuses on basic canine life skills such as loose leash walking, sit and down, leave it, and most importantly recall. Handlers learn to understand their dog's body language and to build calm and reliable behaviour. As Canine Skills aims to teach dog training from a relationship based approach, we will touch on handling, feeding, exercise and other foundation behaviours. This class is a fun and positive way to continue on from puppy class or to start training with any dog over 4 months.
Canine Skills Level 2 takes the skills learned in Level 1 and builds on them, adding real life practice scenarios and working through common distractions There are also new behaviours learned and handlers will learn more about solving behavioural problems and interpreting their dog's body language. This course is perfect for any dog who has completed Level 1 or who has a comparable level of positive reinforcement training.
Canine Skills is taught by Liza Rader, who many of you know as one of our daycare attendants. Liza has over a decade of training experience and has additional experience teaching and running seminars.
Both courses are 8 sessions long and $220 with 10% off for our regular daycare clients!
Adventure Training Walks
Take training into the real world with our Adventure Training Walks! This class is a unique opportunity for a wide variety of dogs and handlers. Located at Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest, this ongoing class offers the opportunity for dogs to practice their skills outside of the classroom. One on one training instruction throughout the walks allows us to incorporate the needs of all our different dogs and handlers. Dogs will learn to walk politely on leash around distractions such as dogs, runners, bikes and children and practice their commands and impulse control. We recommend Adventure Walks for any dog that has completed Canine Skills Level 1 or equivalent. It is an excellent choice for dogs who are fearful or reactive, and for anyone who wants the “take anywhere, do anything” type of dog. As the course is designed to be ongoing, there is no end date and classes are designed to advance with each dog's skills.
Adventure Training Walks is designed to be a long term training opportunity that can evolve with your dog. It is $200 for 8 walks, which must be used within 12 weeks (not including holidays). Owners are encouraged to use this resource for as long as they find it valuable.
Miss Demeanour Dog Training - Jeff Rowat
My training philosophy is that dogs need to be mentally prepared and willing to solve problems to fully benefit from any training situation, and that every dog and handler combination is different. We set them up to succeed with a series of controlled challenges, and when they succeed they gain confidence in themselves as well as the leadership from the handler. The end result is a stable, reliable response and a dog which is willing to take on more activity and is enthusiastic about learning because it's stimulating and fun.
I offer ongoing classes for beginners and puppies, and have the flexibility to run additional groups weekdays as well. We also offer a midweek group for dogs which "don't play well with others" to learn to focus on the handler and not the distractions. I encourage all interested parties to call, email, or drop in and see what we're all about.
