Want your dog to come running when you call, every time?
Even with distractions?
This past week I wrapped up training with two amazing women, Connie and Jo.
They love their dogs and wanted to enjoy their lives with them, but they felt constrained and limited. They were frustrated by their dog’s dangerous and embarrassing behaviour, and were seeing an increase in annoying and destructive behaviour.
Why? Because their dogs can’t be trusted off leash.
Connie, her dog Atlas goes ballistic the moment he’s let off leash. It’s like he goes deaf and he just careens around, crashing into people, harassing other dogs and stealing toys. Because he is so nutty the second she lets him go, she can only take him off leash at the tiny dog parks that smell like pee. When she needed to leave, she had to trick Atlas into coming near her, and he grew wise to her tricks. Last time she ended up in the dirt as he darted away from her. They don’t visit the dog parks often, it’s just too embarrassing.
Jo’s dog Scout is a little different. She’ll stick with her and enjoy their time together. Until there is a jogger, or a rabbit. After she ran into the road after a squirrel and very nearly got hit by a car, Jo vowed to never let her off leash again. That was over a year ago.
These owners love their dogs. They both feel guilty for limiting their freedom. They know that their dogs would be less destructive if they had more exercise. They know that they would bark less, and stop racing to the front door every time anyone so much as moves! But the shame, and the anxiety, and the very real risk are too much.
They both knew they needed help. They wanted that connection, reliability and trust they saw with other people and dogs.
So they reached out. They took that big scary step and asked for help.
They banished fear and anxiety.
They both now have dogs who come RUNNING when called!
Jo now goes hiking every weekend, safe and secure in the knowledge that Scout will stick with her.
Connie was able to take Atlas to the cabin with her family, and he was able to play happily off leash without being a hazard!
Both women have seen a marked decrease in the annoying barking, chewing and leash pulling.
And they now get to experience the joy of spending time with their dog, knowing they will CHOOSE to come back!
